Scarecrow Owls 🦉

Do fake owls really work to deter pests?

Yes, studies from major institutions like Cornell University have shown that Dalen's owl decoys effectively scare away pests. However, not all birds are the same, and in some cases they may not be scared of them. You will increase your chances of effectiveness by using owls that turn their heads, or by moving the owls to different locations periodically.

Is a rotating-head owl more effective than a fixed-head owl?

Yes - rotating-head owls add lifelike movement, enhancing their effectiveness in deterring pests. Dalen has a variety of different owls with rotating movement.

Where should I place the owl for best results?

It is best to position the owl in a prominent spot where pests can easily see it, such as near gardens, docks, or patios. You could also use it on a boat, or anywhere outside, especially where you have crops or other items you want to protect from birds.

How can I make the owls be sturdy so they can stay up without blowing down?

Our owls arrive with an empty inside cavity. They can be mounted on poles, hung using built-in holes, or filled with sand or gravel to weigh them down. We also sell mounts, which you can use at your convenience to mount them easily to trees or polls.

Are Dalen's owl decoys weather-resistant?

Yes, they are designed to withstand various weather conditions - including strong rain, snow, and wind. They can withstand hot and cold temperatures.

Do the owls require any maintenance?

Minimal maintenance is needed; you can occasionally clean the owl and ensure it remains securely positioned - but otherwise they are totally self-sufficient!

Where are Dalen's owl decoys manufactured?

The majority of Dalen's products - including most of the owl decoys - are made in the USA. We are proud to be the largest US-producer of owl decoys, building the trust of millions of customers and top retailers.

How long will the owl decoy last?

Dalen's owl decoys are durable and can last for many years.

Can the owl deter larger animals like deer?

Owl decoys are primarily effective against birds and small mammals; their impact on larger animals like deer may be limited. However, some customers indicate that they have had success with larger animals too.

Are there other uses for the owls, besides being scaring devices?

Our owls our very well designed and are beautiful objects. Many people like to use them as decorations inside or outside their house, and they also make great gifts for owl and animal lovers.

Edging & Vertical Gardening

What is garden edging?

Edging is the process of creating a defined border to separate different areas in your garden, such as garden beds, pathways, and lawns.

Why is edging important?

Garden edging makes your garden and yard look more organized and beautiful. Aside from these aesthetic purposes, edging separates different areas of your garden. It controls the growth of your plants and prevents them from growing in unwanted areas.

Does garden edging require maintenance?

Garden edging maintenance is not time consuming or challanging, but it should be checked regularly for any damage or movement. You should also remove any weeds to prevent them from crawling into your garden bed.

What is vertical gardening?

Vertical gardening is the system of maximizing your space, by allowing you to keep your plants vertically on your wall or ceiling using containers, such as our vertical planters or trellises.

What types of plants are ideal for vertical gardening?

You can grow different plants in your vertical garden, such as herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Just remember to secure your plants properly with garden twist ties.

How do I water my vertical garden?

Watering can be challenging with vertical gardens since water can easily miss certain areas. We suggest using an irrigation system or watering your plants individually to ensure they are all adequately watered.
